"I want to remind them that they are still very important."

"I want to remind them that they are still very important."

Whenever Mdm Guat Hoon welcomes a senior into an O'Joy session, these words guide everything she does.

A warm smile.

A simple greeting.

A short conversation.

Sometimes, that's all it takes to remind someone they still matter.

Ironically, there was a time when she and her husband needed that reminder themselves.

Just a few years ago, the couple rarely left their home. Their days were quiet and predictable—sleeping in, watching television and keeping mostly to themselves. With few opportunities to socialise, life gradually became smaller, especially for her husband, who had always been reserved.

"I worried that this would become our life," she recalls.

Then one afternoon, on their way home from the market, they noticed a lively group of seniors gathered at a nearby community centre. Curious, they stopped to watch from a distance.

A volunteer noticed them standing quietly at the side.

Instead of walking past, the volunteer smiled and invited them to join.

It was a small gesture.

It changed everything.

Since joining O'Joy's Health-Oriented Ageing programme in 2022, the couple has found much more than activities. Through music, exercise, art and shared laughter, they rediscovered something they hadn't realised they were missing—a sense of belonging.

"We really enjoy coming," Mdm Guat Hoon says. "Every session gives us something to look forward to."

As familiar faces within the community, they were later invited to become volunteers.

Her husband surprised her by accepting immediately.

"I couldn't believe it," she laughs. "He's extremely introverted. But he said yes without hesitation. So I said yes too."

Today, the couple spends several mornings each week welcoming fellow seniors, preparing activity spaces and, most importantly, making people feel comfortable enough to stay.

For Mdm Guat Hoon, the most meaningful part isn't organising the sessions.

It's noticing the people who might otherwise go unnoticed.

She has met seniors who live alone, those who rarely speak and others beginning to experience memory loss. She knows that behind every quiet smile could be loneliness, grief or fear.

"Sometimes they just need someone to say hello," she says gently. "Even a short conversation can brighten their whole day."

She understands because she has been there herself.

The invitation that once helped her step out of isolation has become the same invitation she now extends to others.

Today, she and her husband don't simply attend O'Joy programmes.

They help create the welcoming community that first changed their own lives.

"I want to remind them that they are still very important."

Every day, O'Joy brings seniors out of isolation and into a community where they are seen, valued and connected. Many, like Mdm Guat Hoon and her husband, go on to become volunteers themselves—creating a ripple effect of care that reaches even more people.
