Every Step with Mum

Every Step with Mum

"Walker first. Then left foot. Then right foot."

Every week, Ms Ng (not her real name) walks patiently beside her mother through the streets of Kallang.

The journey is slow. Every step takes effort. But Ms Ng never rushes her.

Because she knows these walks are about much more than reaching O'Joy.

They are about holding on to precious moments with the woman who has always been her greatest source of strength.

Life changed when Ms Ng's father passed away.

The loss left both mother and daughter grieving, but there was little time to process their emotions. As her mother grew older, everyday tasks became more difficult. Walking became painful. Her muscles weakened, and she increasingly relied on a walker to get around.

Almost without realising it, Ms Ng found herself stepping into a new role—not just as a daughter, but as her mother's caregiver.

"She's the one who has always taken care of me," Ms Ng says softly. "Now it's my turn to take care of her."

Like many family caregivers, Ms Ng wanted to stay strong for her mother. Yet behind every hospital appointment, every careful walk and every daily routine was a quiet emotional weight she carried on her own.

Would her mother's mobility continue to decline?

Would she lose her confidence to leave the house?

Would the woman who had always been so independent slowly become isolated?

Those worries stayed with Ms Ng every day.

Finding O'Joy became a turning point for both of them.

Each week, they attend O'Joy's BIXEP therapy sessions together. While her mother works patiently to strengthen her muscles and improve her balance, Ms Ng finds reassurance in knowing they are not walking this journey alone.

The weekly sessions became more than therapy.

They became hope.

"I believe in my heart that she wishes to walk freely again without the walker," Ms Ng says.

That hope is what keeps them coming back.

Every visit gives her mother another opportunity to build strength and confidence. Just as importantly, it gives Ms Ng the comfort of knowing that someone is journeying alongside them—encouraging, supporting and celebrating every small milestone together.

Today, those weekly walks have become a cherished ritual.

Every careful step is a reminder that progress isn't always measured by distance. Sometimes it is measured by perseverance, dignity and the determination to keep moving forward together.

For Ms Ng, caring for her mother can still be emotionally demanding. But she no longer feels she has to carry the responsibility alone.

Through O'Joy, she has found not only support for her mother's physical wellbeing, but also encouragement for herself as a caregiver—reminding her that caring for someone else begins with knowing someone is there to support you too.

Every day, countless family caregivers quietly shoulder the responsibility of looking after ageing parents while balancing their own grief, work and personal lives. Through programmes like BIXEP, O'Joy helps seniors remain active and independent, while giving caregivers the confidence, support and hope to continue their journey.

Every step you take during Walk for Joy by O'Joy helps families like Ms Ng's keep walking together—supporting not only the person receiving care, but also the loved one walking faithfully beside them.

Because behind every senior is someone who loves them.

And behind every caregiver should be a community that reminds them:

You'll Never Walk Alone.
